The Ramayana is often told as the epic journey of the prince of Ayodhya, Rama, and his path to kingship. Yet, did you know that some of the earliest written versions from the 5th and 6th centuries BCE centre the narrative on Sita, making her the heart of the story? These early texts make no mention of Rama as an avatar of Vishnu, a concept that emerged later under the influence of the Gupta dynasty’s Vaishnavism, immortalising the ten avatars and reshaping the epic’s spiritual dimensions.
With over 300 versions worldwide, the Ramayana weaves countless tales of sacrifice, separation, and devotion, none truly definitive, yet all deeply resonant. This series steps away from the familiar to explore the untold stories: Dasharatha’s daughter Shanta, whose life was sacrificed for an heir; Mandodari, queen of Lanka, whose fate was never her own; Urmila, the silent strength of a woman waiting for her husband; and a fresh take on how Rama met Sita during his quest to defeat the demoness Taraka.
Also included is a personal reflection on why Rama’s decision to send his pregnant wife into exile, although a grievous mistake, still covers the traditional view of him as the perfect king.
Journey beyond the known Ramayana and discover the epic through new eyes where myth, history, and human complexity intertwine.
