Most of us have heard about the famous Love Saga of Sultan Baz Bahadur of Malwa and his Hindu queen Rani Roopmati and their ill-fated end. Historically speaking, we know Baz Bahadur ruled Malwa from 1555 to 1562 and very little is known of his personal life or queens. The existence of Roopmati as the poor girl turned queen is merely limited to our folklore. What we do know is that if the story did happen as we know, Baz Bahadur outlived Roopmati when he escaped the lost cause of battle with Adham Khan and sought help from Khandesh, Mewar, Gwalior and other states that opposed Akbar's policies. Malwa fell to the Mughal (Timurid) empire and became part of their state when he fled. What happened to his surviving kin is unknown. That made me wonder about the women he left behind in the palace, especially his beloved Roopmati. It made me question the saga of love and sacrifice the folklore preaches. So here is my retelling of the folklore, a little changed and twisted due to collaborating with historical events, but folklore nonetheless, I don't claim the characters, events or emotions to be more than fiction and I hope you read it as you would read another alternate fiction story. Thank You.
